Scare Your Way from the Police Station to Oak Square

The 13th annual Brighton Business Trick-Or-Treat will take place Friday afternoon, between the Allston-Brighton D-14 Police Station and the YMCA in Oak Square.

Participating businesses display a sign in their doorway/windows, "Welcome Trick or Treaters!"

Be warned: if you visit all the businesses, your children will get so much candy that you'll spend your next three paychecks on dentistry work.

Johnny D's, a produce seller at 381 Washington Street [right], is the perennial, odds-on favorite for best treat.

St. Elizabeth's Easter Egg Hunt Saturday Morning

St. Elizabeth's Medical Center is hosting their annual Gerry McCarthy Memorial Easter Egg hunt this Saturday morning. The event will take place on the former St. John's Seminary grounds -- now Boston College "Brighton Campus" -- near the Chancery and Gymnasium buildings.

Saturday, March 15th, 2008
2121 Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton, MA 02135

Preceding the egg hunts: Visits by Mayor Thomas Menino and the Easter Bunny, as well as displays by Fire Department and Ambulance Services

9:30 am -- Toddler Easter Egg Hunt
10:00 am -- Older Children Easter Egg Hunt

BYOB (bring your own basket)

Not only is Easter very early this year, but the hunt is a week before Easter, probably resulting in the earliest date on record for an Easter Egg hunt. Weather forecast? Rain and snow Saturday morning.

St. Elizabeth's Medical Center press release:

Saturday, March 15, 2008 - the week before Easter - St. E’s joins local children and families in festivities; commemorative gifts will be given to each child who attends

Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center celebrates Easter with its 25th Anniversary of the Annual Gerry McCarthy Memorial Easter Egg Hunt. During the 15-minute hunt, approximately 1,000 neighborhood children and their parents will search for more than 16,000 trinket-filled eggs. A special Toddlers’ Egg Hunt will also be held for children ages two and younger. Event location is the Archdiocese Chancery/Boston College at 2121 Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton.

Morning activities include a scheduled appearance by Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny. There will also be demonstrations by the Boston Fire Department and Armstrong Ambulance and refreshments

Egg hunting for toddlers begins promptly at 9:30 a.m, Hunt for older children begins promptly at 10 a.m. Event will take place rain, snow, or shine.

The annual egg hunt is named in memory of the late Gerry McCarthy, an Allston-Brighton resident and youth activist, who started it in the 1960’s.

Brighton Tree Lighting: Saturday in Oak Square; Monday in Brighton Center

The annual tree lighting (and trolley tour) events are coming to Allston-Brighton during the next week. These are a chance to meet Santa Claus, drink cider, eat candy canes, watch the holiday Christmas tree be lit -- and, for Oak Square only, go on a trolley tour. You know, that thing that rides on train tracks down the middle of Washington Street...

Oak Square: Saturday, December 1st, 5:00 pm. Annual Trolley Tour and Tree Lighting.

Brighton Center: Monday, December 3rd, 6:00 pm. Tree Lighting.

Jackson-Mann School / Community Center (Allston): Thursday, December 6th, 11:30 am. Tree Lighting.

This Saturday: Dueling Christmas Bazaars

Annual Christmas Bazaar at St. Columbkille's 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

The annual Christmas Bazaar at St. Columbkille's parish will happen this Saturday, December 1st, at 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, 25 Arlington Street, Brighton, 02135. Lots of arts and crafts for sale, silent auctions, and, presumably, the Cookie Room Bag Stuffing Contest (as many cookies as you can fit in one bag for a fixed price).

Christkindlmarkt at the German International School 1:00 - 5:00 pm

This is a "traditional" German Christmas fair being held by new North Allston neighbors, the German International School, at the former St. Anthony’s School, 57 Holton Street, Allston, MA 02134, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.  "Santa, lots of kids activities, gluehwein (hot mulled wine, the real thing!), beer and nonalcoholic beverages, all kinds of food, a kids raffle, traditional holiday crafts, and more!"  The Christmas sausages are no doubt "Blutwurst" (red) and vegetarian (green).
